Lawmakers Lampoon Decision To Rename French Fries

WASHINGTON -- Some House Democrats are boiling mad over the decision by Republicans to take the "French" out of French fries in some Capitol cafeterias.
Congressman Jim McDermott calls it an act of "buffoonery."
He says renaming them "freedom fries" -- and calling French toast "freedom toast" -- won't really do anything for the morale of U.S. forces.
The move was meant to symbolize the anger some lawmakers feel over French opposition to a U.S.-led war on Iraq. But McDermott and Congressman James McGovern say the effort only serves to make the House look foolish.
McGovern said the French are being singled out, noting that so far, nobody's tried to change the names of German chocolate cake or Russian salad dressing -- and that "the entire Chinese food section" has also been spared.
On Tuesday, lawmakers announced that cafeterias in the U.S. House of Representatives are serving up an order of patriotism, with "freedom fries" on the side.
A Republican lawmaker ordered a change in the menus to protest France's opposition to war with Iraq.
The French Embassy in Washington had no comment. But it does point out that french fries actually come from Belgium.
Ohio Congressman Bob Ney ordered the menu change. He says french fries will return when the French government comes around.
